Abstract

By deconstructing various social and historical aspects, this paper explains the social causes and consequencs that led to the emergence of terrorist activites in the Caucasus. Cultural, religious and nationalistic tendencies, driven by certain events which transform and directly and indirectly influence the development of terrorism are analysed through a prism of social structure. Within the context of orientalism, a specific development of a perspective that russians hold towards the people of the Caucasus is shown, along with the effect of artistic presentation. A background that enabled the development of new extremist religious and political tendencies that ultimately resulted in a number of terrorist actions and the creation of terrorist organizations is defined through an analysis based on relevant events in Chechnya in the post-Soviet period. Within the context of that phenomenon, wars in Chechnya are analysed as the most relevant factor of destabilization. Destructive implications of extremism and terrorism that affect not only the individual, but also the centuries long social structure are presented on the example of Chechnya. The emerging media representations of caucasian peoples and the policy of the russian government which developed subsequently are described as consequences of terrorist activities. Furthermore, all attempts to combat terrorism so far through methods of decapitation and repression, as well as their results, are analysed.
