Abstract

Today, during quick life changes we are meeting one, which is consistent, surrounding us everyday and impossible to ignore it. Society, that we live in today, is transforming every day. Changes can be seen in private sphere, meaning in family, and in public sphere. The main domain in which we can notice these differences is relationship between man and woman. Women, today, have a lot more possibilities than over the decades. Because of that fact, this work is questioning women status, participation in public sphere and competing in politics. This question is including not only women, but also family and everyday public life. Due to the influence of traditional and patriarchal society, women are transforming from mothers and housewives into working, career making and equal society participants. But they are not positioned as equal as men, they still need to earn acknowledgment and prove themselves capable. Gender division to traditional “male” and “female” roles made men “stronger” and women “more sensitive” ones. Those kinds of differences are impossible to imagine in societies of high democracy and tolerance. But our culture is the one producing those kinds of values and until we change things in our culture we won’t be able to avoid situations of gender discrimination. Politics, as part of public sphere of life, was for a long time men territory. Women becoming careerists, start to participate in politics on positions that are very important, like government and parliament. There are now 28,6% women in our government, but it is not enough. This percentage is very good, but not enough. If we look at percentages on local levels, we can say that there are many problems and conditions that still need to be met. What is the reason for their participation in politics, why are there few women in local politics, what is getting in their way to activate themselves more? These are just some of the questions that we need to ask ourselves to get full image of situation in our society today. Family, standing behind in private sphere, is living with responsibilities and pressures that this kind of career produces on a person. Sacrificing some parts of private life and taking chances in world of politics women are standing on a crossroad. It is now, that they have to make changes in themselves and in their family so that they could synchronize private and public sphere of life. The most important changes are changes towards women, and changes in the relationship between men and women. Their relationship in the family should be partnership, relationship full of understanding and support. In that way there would no loner be separation of “men and female” housework, and women would be no longer just mothers and housewives. That kind of thinking could bring us to a new perspective for culture and society in treating women as equals.
