Abstract
Protection and preservation of every unit of library material and the space where the units are held is the policy of every MLA institution. One main aspect of protection is prevention. This thesis deals with the matter, especially concerning bugs and rodents. Clear legal regulations are needed for a proper protection. These laws define which units and which methods are to be used for protection and preservation. Materials that are determined whether by content or by form as a great exemplar of a nation’s culture or which have aesthetic, documentary, historic or informational value are due to these laws considered as cultural heritage and hereby worthy of legal protection and preservation. The main goal is keeping the material in its original form for the sake of preservation for future generations, which is achieved through individual book care and good hygiene. Prevention is highly important, which means check-ups on every unit of material and regular inspections of library spaces, so that no insects or rodents inhabit.
