Abstract
National libraries are libraries which collect and store nationally related materials. In other words, their catalogues consist of material that is either in their respective language, is written by authors of that nationality or the content of the material is connected to the respective country, nation or language. The second purpose of the most of the national libraries, apart from the collecting the nationally related material, is the listing of the national bibliography, both the contemporary and the retrospective one, in order to make their catalogues more visible to the greater number of users. Moreover, the national bibliography can also attract users to use the material or to come to the library and enjoy numerous cultural events held there. Since today the use of the Internet and Web 2.0. tools is inevitable, more and more libraries start to use them as well. They make their own web-sites and digital libraries and they are active on social networks. This enables them to increase their visibility among users and to inform them faster and easier. In this paper we present all European national libraries and their presence on the Internet. We show the data about their web-sites, online services and Web 2.0. tools they use. We also discuss are the materials they put on the Internet up to date. The goal of this research is to show if the national libraries in Europe follow the global trends, if they develop according to them and if they are using the Internet to improve their visibility and usability.
