Abstract

Intimate partner violence is considered a personal, family and social problem which significantly impairs the quality of life and has a short-term and long-term consequences on physical and mental health of all who are exposed to it. Due to under-researched issues of association between intimate partner violence and quality of health of women victims of abuse, the aim of this study was to examine the realtionship between health-related quality of life and exposure to intimate partner violence, and the association between health-related quality of life and social support. The study involved 92 women, of which two groups of participants exposed to psychological and physical abuse by their intimate partner, and a group of participants who have never experienced these types of partner violence. Questionnaire of sociodemographic characteristics, questionnaires of exposure to psychological and physical violence, the Short-Form Health Survey and the Social Support Questionnaire were administered on the participants when they arrived in the Social Welfare Center in Pula. It was found that non abused and abused participants differ significantly in the percieved quantity and satisfaction with social support, and also in the health-related quality of life (overall, pshysical and mental health). Physically abused compared to non abused partcipants reported lower social support and lower health-related quality of life. Psychologically and physically abused participants did not differ significantly in health-related quality of life (overall and physical health). Health-related quality of life (physical health) could be explained by physical abuse, duration of abuse and satisfaction with social support, while health-related quality of life (mental health) could be explained by total experienced abuse and satisfaction with social support.
