Abstract
The aim of the present study was to investigate the relationship between the usage of Facebook and the affective component of subjective well-being. Fifty people aged between 24-60 participated in a two-phased online research. In the first phase of the study, the participants completed a set of questionnaires, which included the PANAS, the Facebook Intensity Scale and some sociodemographic characteristics. During the second phase, the participants were involved in a seven-day diary-based study completing three short online surveys daily. Results have shown a statistically significant positive correlation between negative affectivity and the frequency of scrolling while using Facebook. Positive affectivity has not been proven to correlate significantly neither with the usage of Facebook in general and communicating while using Facebook nor with the emotional attachment to Facebook. According to the obtained results, neither is there a congruence between the trends of current mood and the frequency of communicating while using Facebook, nor is there a contrariety between the current mood and the frequency of scrolling while using Facebook. Results are discussed with regards to implications and directions for future research.
