Abstract
The present thesis deals with schizophrenic language impairments from two perspectives: psychiatrist's and linguist's respective viewpoints. From the psychiatrist's perspective, abnormalities of language are classified as positive and negative formal thought disorder. Positive formal thought disorder refers to disorganized language output and negative formal thought disorder refers to poverty of speech and language. We describe schizophrenia as a neuropsychiatric disorder, clinical characterizations of schizophrenic speech (better known as „formal thought disorder“), and the way these abnormalities have been conceptualized in the psychiatric literature. From the linguist's perspective we first discuss Vigotsky's theory of „Thought and Language“, trying to explain the relationship between thought and language. By focusing on syntax, semantic and pragmatic aspects of language disorder in schizophrenia and by describing main theories that have been proposed as a explanation of language disfunction, we reveal how psycholinguistic approaches may contribute to the theories of language processing in healthy individuals. We also present Levelt's model of language production which offers a possible explanation of cognitive processes, such as planning, executive functions or memory that may underlie schizophrenic language impairments.
