Abstract

This paper focuses on the linguistic landscape of Belgrade. Taking up the definition of LL offered by Ben Rafael (2009), this paper examines signs present in the public sphere on two locations in Belgrade. The focus is on signs which display language only in its written form. A study of public signage can provide a valuable insight into the linguistic situation of place, including common patterns of language usage, official language policies and language contact, among others. Analysing languages and scripts, as well as some multimodal features , visible on publicly available signs of two locations, this paper examines representation and production of LL. Having in mind close relationship beween sociocultural context and LL, the aim of the analyses is to compare and interpret similarities and differences of two LL, as well as to determine factors which influence on their presentation and production.
