Abstract
The purpose of this research was to determine the role of the duration of shifts and stressors at work in predicting job satisfaction and general, mental and physical health of male night workers. The data was collected in production organizations through extensive research which examined the organization of shift work, the demands of the work and the circumstances of the workplace, as well as the physical and mental health of employees in Croatia. The results of regression analyses show that different sources of stress are significant predictors for all criterion variables, especially demands of the work, which are significant predictors of all variables of health. Demands of the work, problematic relationships and acquaintance with changes are significant predictors in predicting general health. For the criterion of mental health the best predictors are demands, control and problematic relationships. Physical health is significantly explained only with demands, and job satisfaction only with superiors support. Furthermore, the results show that older employees are of poorer physical and general health than younger employees. These results confirm only the second hypothesis since the duration of the shift cannot predict the results in any of the criteria while specific sources of stress are significant predictors of subjective health and job satisfaction.
