Abstract
A large amount amount of research link individual’s attachment to a certain physical environment with a number of positive outcomes for that individual and for their surroundings. Of particular interest is the neighborhood as a proximate life surrounding. Therefore, an increasing number of research studies determinants of neighborhood attachment. This research was conducted on convenience quota sample (N=349) through a questionnaire in the area of three Zagreb’s city districts which differ in socio-economic structure of residents. The main research objective was to identify determinants of neighborhood attachment in the Croatian cultural context, to examine the previous findings on the importance of socio-economic structure and to determine the importance of the ethnic structure to the neighborhood attachment. We introduced new potential determinants: neighborhood ethnic structure, owning property, plan of moving and satisfaction with certain aspects of the neighborhood. We also determined the differences among the residents of different city districts in a number of demographic variables and variables related to their neighborhood. Differences were found in the indicators of socio-economic status, length of residence, the perceived neighborhood economic/ethnic structure and the satisfaction with the amenities and green areas in the neighborhood. With control of the place of residence, the determinants of neighborhood attachment in this study are satisfaction with amenities and green areas, frequency of visits to the neighborhood, plan of moving, residence lenght and number of close friends and relatives in the neighborhood. Perception of proportion of the poor is relevant predictor of neighborhood attachment only for residents of one city district.
