Abstract
This thesis presents an analytical commentary on selected passages from Annibal Caro’s translation of book IV of Virgil’s Aeneid, constituting over a third of the book. The passages are arranged chronologically. A parallel reading of the original text contrasted with Caro’s
version is offered, the differences between the two texts being marked and commented upon. The focus of the commentary is rather an investigation of the ways in which Caro adapts the Virgilian epic to the sensibilities of his own period than a strictly philological analysis. Three major tendencies in his approach to the work of translation are pointed out, none of which, however, has been adopted with consistency: (i) the introduction of vocables associated with Petrarchist, Stilnovist and courtly love stylistic conventions (e.g. bellezza or nobiltà) and their expansion in some semantically related passages; (ii) the de-paganization of many features of
the Virgilian text, such as descriptions (express or implicit) of Roman deities, with some peculiarly Christian superadditions; and, most remarkably, (iii) the introduction of the “psychological” Christian notion of pietà (pity) alongside of the “dutiful” Roman pietas, and
the resultant composite of the two, in which the distinctions between the two are obscured by a shared referring vocabulary and a general confusion of the obligational with the affective. This latter tendency also exemplifies, in our opinion, the general “Christianized” sensibility of Caro’s work.
