Abstract
The first part of this thesis comprises of a thorough and extensive theoretical background explaining massive open online courses, reasons for their appearance, digital practice and their tasks. Implications of massive open online courses in acquring new knowledge and digital economy is also processed. Analyzed in the second part is education in such an environment alongside the positive and negative aspects of the learning process and acquiring knowledge in contast to the traditional learning process. In the third part certain platforms, respectively world universities which offer such programmes will be compared. Courses concepts, course participants structure, certificate availability and resources other than the teaching material used will be analyzed. Considering the huge popularity of these courses and the small percentage of participants that complete them a lot of discussions related to their further development are held. It is extremly important to get insights into reasons why participants drop out, especially since a lot of funds and effort is invested in organizing and structuring such education. In the fourth part reasons for such a high drop out rate will be given and conclusions drawn by analyzing various available polls, reports and scientific papers alongside the results and insights into the motivating factors of the participants.
