Abstract
This paper analyzes how students of the University of Zagreb use the Internet social network Facebook for the purpose of learning by. The conceptual framework is based on previous theoretical and empirical research on the subject and our own analysis in which we examine the results of the online questionnaire (N = 150) that was conducted in September 2016. The main hypothesis of the paper is that "The students of the University of Zagreb use Facebook as an important tool in learning." Most students (58%) expressed agreement with the importance of Facebook as aids to learning. All respondents were a part of at least one student Facebook group. Students who are members of more student Facebook groups and who often visit them had higher scores on the original scale of attitude toward Facebook as a tool of e-learning 2.0. They also had a greater number of Facebook "friends" who were students from their department. This was the cognitive dimension of accumulated social capital online. Furthermore, we analyze the differences in the attitudes of respondents to Facebook as a tool of e-learning 2.0 between different groups of students characterised by the frequency of their activities on Facebook that are related to learning.
