Abstract
This article addresses A. Flaker’s study Proza u trapericama (1st edition in 1976; 2nd, expanded edition in 1983) in which the relationship between literature and the popular culture is analysed in regard to the overall cultural experience of the geographical spaces of the West and the East Europe. By situating prose models with young narrator in jeans in the interspace between high and trivial literature, this Croatian Slavicist offers his particular way out from the 70’s interpretation crisis. This takes place at the same time when he shyly foreshadows propaedeutical fracture of the humanities, that are established on the binary oppositions between high – low (easy – heavy, elite – mass etc.). By detaching jeans as one of the key prototexts in one type of literature of the period, Flaker addresses one of the major contemporary queries: who, actually, produces the meaning of a literature text.
