Abstract
The present doctoral thesis contains the analysis of the popular poems written by Ivan Šuljić Iveša as part of the popular literature of the island of Pag. Pag has a significant number of popular poets, both male and female, and one of the most prominent ones is the popular poet Ivan Šuljić Iveša from Novalja, whose popular poems have been recognized and well accepted within the community. The analysis and interpretation of Iveša's unpublished popular poems were conducted in order to determine the position of these poems within the popular poetry of the island, as well as their specificity and their role within the community. The emphasis has been placed on the extra-literary functions of Iveša's popular poems that were achieved through the lessons intended for their targeted recipients and through the conservation of memories of events, people and customs that were significant within the community they were intended for. By describing significant historical events, people and everyday customs, the popular poems aim to point out certain values and virtues and to convey lessons to their recipients. By storing these contents, these poems have determined and passed on parts of the community's memories, thus reinforcing its collective identity. The popular poems of Ivan Šuljić Iveša have also fulfilled their role by selecting, determining and passing on parts of the collective remembrance of the community, which was itself approved by the community according to its current social context. The collective remembrance conditions the identity of the communities of memories which form a certain attitude towards the past by choosing those historical facts that are charged with sense which supports and constructs their existing or desired identity. Therefore, the popular poems of Ivan Šuljić Iveša have been placed into a theoretical frame of memory and remembrance and the frame of contemporary theories of culture and identity, within which it is being determined to what extent do the popular verses preserve and pass on the memories of the community and take part in the consolidation of its identity.
