Abstract
This paper deals with the development of the digital reference services. Reference services are one of the main and most popular services provided by libraries. The rapid development of information technologies has disembedded all social relationships and moved them to the virtual sphere. Thanks to the world wide interconnectivity, an enormous amount of unrevised information has become available on the Internet, which is the first source users turn to for its availability, simplicity and speed of use. It is necessary to secure an expert and quick access to relevant and reliable information, especially regarding reference retrieval for academical papers . Taking IFLAs Digital Reference Guidelines as a starting point, this paper will attempt to provide a comparative display of the development and characteristics of the digital reference services, primarily Ask a Librarian.
