Abstract
The aims of this study were to examine the level of psychological distress in the sample of refugees and other migrants accommodated in the reception centre for international protection, and whether the selected resources and some socio-demographic characteristics predict the level of psychological distress and life satisfaction under such
circumstances. The study included 122 refugees and migrants, mostly young men from Iraq, Afghanistan and Syria, registered in the reception centre in Zagreb in mid-July
2016. As expected, a large number of refugees and migrants reported having symptoms of psychological distress during their stay in the reception centre where there is a great
uncertainty regarding their status of international protection and their future. Selected psychological and social resources did not predict the level of psychological distress, but sex and level of education did. The symptoms of psychological distress, optimism and gender were significant predictors of life satisfaction of refugees and migrants accommodated in the reception centre. The instrument used to assess psychological distress was well applicable for rapid assessment of mental health status. The study points the importance of early assessment of mental health and referral to professional help of refugees.
