Abstract

The main purpose of this study was to determine the amount of fear and test the way it manifests during students' speech, while the aim of this research was to reduce their fear by using guidelines and exercises, and cause more relaxed and better performance during the second recording. Students were recorded twice. The research results show the difference between the first and the second students' performance in front of the camera. The difference is seen in questionnaires answered by the participants and their three assessors. Students were given questions that they did not know in advance. They were obliged to speak in the time limit of one minute. Between these two performances, students were given exercises and guidelines in order to reduce fear and nervousness. According to participants' responses and statistical analysis of assessors' responses, the results indicate reduced fear and nervousness among the participants during the second recording. In the study participated ten students of phonetics, all of whom are students of Faculty of humanities and social sciences in Zagreb. The average age is 20 years. These are students of first and second year. Participants were students who have little or no experience in public speaking, because it was expected that this kind of situation would cause a greater amount of fear and nervousness.
