Abstract
The aim of this paper is to provide a comprehensive view of archival processing and protection of film material to ensure long-term conservation and availability of the material as a national film heritage in the historic, cultural and other sociological aspects. First three chapters describe a historical overview of the development of film archives. Next three chapters describe basic characteristics of analog film material and the specific practices developed in film archives for handling analog materials. Next two chapters are related to the film in the digital age and describe digitization projects that archives implemented in order to respond to user requests. Next two chapters deal with natural born digital materials and analyze the problems of modern archives in handling digital materials. Last three chapters deal with the reconstruction and restoration of the entire film material, availability and use of the material in the whole range of media and formats, and evaluation as an important archival activity. Final part outlines some basic problems which I see as the main obstacles for a development of modern film archives.
