Abstract

The thesis describes the regional dialect of Prelog and it examines the differences between the formerly described speech characteristics and the present situation among the younger speakers of dialect. What is also being explored are the ways in which immanent grammar and students' regional dialect can attribute to the development of plurilingual competence and easier standard language mastering. Moreover, the author presents some important methodological principles teachers should rely on in order to enable students to grow according to their personal, cultural and linguistic characteristics. The aim of the research part, based on a tripartite view by Rosenberg and Hovland, is to examine the attitudes the teachers in Primary school in Prelog have towards their dialect. Descriptive parameters, coefficient correlation and chi-squared test were used to establish whether the teachers’ attitudes are positive or negative, correlation in the dimension of the attitudes and the influence of the teachers’ characteristics on their attitudes toward the regional dialect. The results, based on a questionnaire and a Likert scale, have shown that teachers' attitudes are in general positive and are not substantially influenced by the characteristics such as gender, work experience, professional status, teaching area and dialect they use. However, it has been noticed that the teachers correct students' errors to a great extent and that they are not fully aware of the positive influence that dialects can have in class.
