Abstract

In the last 15-20 years, standard archives and old ways of storing data have been replaced by new ways of storing, using and preserving data in the long term for new types of media. These are digital repositories, i.e. online platforms which collect and permanently store the output of scientific-research, intellectual and creative activities of a particular institution. Digital repositories have been developed from databases out of the need to store scientific digital data in one place and to enable easy use and access to it. In order to make it possible and to make digital repositories functional, some preliminary work should be done. This includes creating metadata schemas on which the repository should be based, defining the protocols which should operate the repository, specifying unique terms of models of documents and enabling the interoperability of the repository (that is, provision and acquisition of other systems’ services). The aim of this paper is to describe the overall functioning of digital repositories by using the example of the DABAR system’s infrastructure. The DABAR system (Digital Academic Archives and Repositories) is a new platform which consists of institutional and thematic digital repositories and provides its own technical solutions to the maintenance and upkeep of digital content. According to the Act on Amendments to the Act on Scientific Activity and Higher Education (2013), DABAR has become a national infrastructure of the science and education system in the Republic of Croatia. Since 2015 DABAR has been actively engaged in the receipt and permanent storage of undergraduate and master’s theses and dissertations in digital format. Islandora has been chosen as the DABAR’s platform. It is an open source software framework designed to help institutions and organizations and their audiences collaboratively manage and discover digital assets. In this paper, a special attention is focused on descriptive metadata and their role in digital repositories. Descriptive metadata are primarily used for identification and description of data. The two most widely used schemas of descriptive metadata are Dublin Core and MODS, which are described in more detail in the paper.
