Abstract

The aim of this paper is to establish the differences between actors who worked on their speaking skills during their professional studies, and those who were not professionally trained. In this study, we will analyze the vocal deliveries of actors in various TV series. The experiment was carried out in the Department of Phonetics at the Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences in Zagreb. Twenty-six students participated in the experiment. In order to establish the quality of the vocal deliveries, we analyzed the following elements: voice, diction, naturalness, expression, fluency of the speech and overall rate. Furthermore, we analyzed the syllabi of the Academy of the Dramatic Arts in detail, and we collected the experiences of two young actors who earned their degrees from the Academy in order to get a better idea of the teaching process there. The results of our research will show that professionally trained actors obtained better overall ratings than the ones who were not professionally trained. However, the difference was not very significant. It is interesting to point out that the women who got their degree from the Academy rated much higher than the women who didn’t, while with male actors the difference was not significant.
