Abstract
Geometric motifs are very common in Upper Paleolithic. They can be found engraved on
objects or painted/engraved on cave walls. They are widespread and are found in Europe
(Spain, Portugal, France, Italy, Croatia), Africa, North and South America and Asia. In
Croatia geometric motifs are known from two sites – Vlakno on Dugi otok and Šandalja II in
Istria. In this thesis, eight artifacts from Šandalja II are discussed. Artifacts can be divided in
two separate categories – simple and complex according to the way they were made.
Interpretations of these engraved objects are various and in this thesis it is suggested that
they were of symbolic nature. Recently, geometric motifs have been garnering a lot of
attention from archaeologists and presently there are multiple theories about possible
function of said motifs. Among the pioneers who offered possible explanations is Alexander
Marshack for whom the engravings on the artifacts are the indisputable proof that the
communities of UP were keeping track of lunar changes. Lewis-Williams and Dowson offered
another explanation in terms of entoptic phenomenon and their theory can explain the
widespread distribution of geometric motifs. On the other hand, G. von Petzinger proposed in
her research that these geometric motifs could be the first steps of early graphic
communication.
