Abstract
Neurofeedback is a computerized method based on tracking the electrical activity of the brain
(electroencephalogram or EEG) and giving a feedback about it, by which the brain learns how
to improve its own performance. Neurofeedback is a relatively new method used in the
treatment of mental illness, including the treatment of depressive disorders. In this review we
explain the background as well as the working rationale of the neurofeedback treatment. We
describe the neurobiological aspects of the depressive disorder important for the
neurofeedback treatment and provide a detailed overview of case reports and experimental
research with a critical review of the field and suggestions for a future research.
