Abstract

This paper deals with current issues and aims of preservation of materials in digital libraries and collections. Furthermore, some of the possible solutions to those problems are presented, including migration, emulation, output to permanent paper or microfilm and preservation of technology as well as the projects that aim to find a permanent solution in the future. But since the security of those digital materials is closely related to their preservation, there are some ways of protecting them that are explained in this paper. Those involve encryption, digital watermarks, signatures and certificates and steganography. Since there is no universal solution to the problem of preserving digital materials, here are presented some challenges of digital preservation with which are national libraries in five countries in the EU faced on everyday basis and strategies to overcome them.
