Abstract
This paper shows the importance of the local collections in public libraries on the example of Warasdiniensia - the local collection of the Public library „Metel Ožegović“ Varaždin. At the begging is a short review about public libraries whose mission is to collect and preserve the local material after which we devote to local collections within the public libraries. There are definitions of local collections, their tasks, the material they cover, as its care and handling. Further follows a brief description of the historical development and today's activities of the Public library "Metel Ožegović" Varaždin. The last part discusses the local collection Warasdiniensia. It covers the history and the development of the collection as well as the area covered by the collection, procurement, processing, storage, care and preservation of its material as the most important source of information for the Varaždin region.
