Abstract

This paper deals with the historical overview of computer virus and the origins of the term virus. Through describing the computer viruses' structure an introduction to the methods of prevention and protection is given. Historical overview of antivirus software with its regards towards the development of computer viruses and its ever-growing dissemination is also given. Basic characteristics shared by all antivirus software and methods used to protect the computer from computer viruses such as virus signature databases, computer virus decryption, use of virtual emulation and heuristics to detect computer viruses.
