Abstract

This paper examines the history of the Croatian State Archives (HDA) since the establishment of the Independent State of Croatia on April 10th 1941 until its collapse in July 1945. The first part provides an overview of the historical and political changes that have occurred with the change of the state framework and the impact of this phenomenon on the organization and functioning of the Croatian State Archives. A special chapter is devoted to the director Dr. Josip Matasović who led the Croatian State Archive in this period with commitment, expertise and successfully bypassed the ideological and political challenges of this period. The chapter on employees of the Croatian State Archives can be taken as a supplement to the previous chapter since the work of the institution was largely conditioned by the professionalism and dedication of its employees. The following chapter is devoted to archival material and shows the most important acquisitions by the Croatian State Archives but also shows the general condition of archival material and especially the destruction and recycling of those materials during military operations. The next two chapters relate to the journal of the Croatian State Archives Arhivski Vijesnik and archival legislation of the Independent Croatian State and are intended as a supplement to the central part of the work. The last chapter is a supplement to the paper and refers to the work of the Croatian War Archives and Museum of the Independent State of Croatia whose establishment and design was directly related to personnel and policy of the Croatian State Archives. The primary purpose of this paper is to provide an overview of the work and organization of the Croatian State Archives in this period and through this work show the state of Croatian archival profession in that period.
