Abstract
The main purpose and objective of archives is long-term preservation of archival materials. The methods of preservation for conventional materials are well known and effective, while digital records are newer and ever-changing, and therefore are not as easy to preserve. Archival material needs to be kept in optimal conditions and protected from causes of damage. This paper describes storage conditions for the records in archives. Some types of damage cannot be avoided and their causes may be different. The greatest threat to archival material are disasters, which can occur naturally or can be caused by human activity. In most cases, disasters are unexpected and their consequences are destructive. A timely response and a pre-planned disaster protection plan will help reduce the damage. After the disaster, it is necessary for the archive to take adequate following actions and initiate conservation and restoration procedures for rescuing the damaged material.
