Abstract
This thesis discusses the development of international fashion photography and its direct influence on Croatian society. After a brief review of the history of international fashion photography, the thesis deals with the lack of conditions for the development of Croatian fashion photography in Yugoslavia and the subsequent changes arising from globalization, the emergence of the world wide web, the transition to capitalism, and the arrival of numerous “women’s” periodicals on the Croatian market. The second chapter is concerned with the development of international fashion photography in terms of Roland Barthes’ primary categorization into literal, romantic and mocking style, a categorization which remains relevant to this day. The influence of these styles is discussed with regards to the definition of identity and the two-way representation of women, feminine and androgynous, used to interpret different feminist approaches in the world as well as in Croatia. The final part of the thesis discusses the influence of fashion and fashion photography in society exercised through mass media.
