Abstract

This paper offers an ethnological and cultural anthropological analysis on the issue of place-making and social memory of Croatian writer Ivan Goran Kovačić (1913-1943) in the context of the poetry festival Goran’s spring. The theoretical framework is based on the contributions of anthropological festival studies, social memory studies and anthropology of place and space. Relying on qualitative research methods and employing strategically situated ethnography, the author starts by questioning in which way are places made and in which way is social memory of Ivan Goran Kovačić expressed within this festival events in Zagreb? Contributions of various festival actors are taken into account in analysing these performative and interactive processes. The paper is organised in three sections: the first offers an overview of the festival’s history from its founding in 1964 till today; the second deals with place-making from “above” and “below”; the third questions narratives and performances of social memory and forgetting within the festival.
