Abstract

The paper seeks to present the basics, phenomena, developments and theories of information science. First of all, we talk about the wider social and cultural context in which information science is emerging, as well as its predecessors in other disciplines that deal with collecting, processing, storing, transmitting and disseminating information. Then, there are some definitions of information science and their subject matter and area. The concepts and phenomena important for information science are discussed: information, its definitions and theories; knowledge; and relevance. Also, two fundamental paradigms in which the information sciences are placed are explained: social epistemology and the philosophy of information. After a systematic review, the paper describes the Croatian context of the emergence and development of information sciences and studies and study programs. The founder of information science in Croatia and in the world - Božo Težak - is particularly prominent.
