Abstract

Catalogues have three essential tasks: 1. alphabetical catalogues have to give an answer to the question whether a library owns certain unit of library material, 2. they have to provide an overview of all its publications, translations, revisions and similar, and 3. they have to provide an overview of all the units of library material that contain the works of a certain author, which are located in the library. In order to fulfill the third task of the alphabetical catalogue, it is neccessary to determine unique forms not only for the authors, but also for their titles, and connect them with all the possible varieties that appear in the publications of original works, their translations, revisions etc. The aim of this thesis is to present the importance of the uniform title by analyzing theory and examining practice of its use on the examples of National and University Library catalogue, and Zagreb City Libraries catalogue. The chosen catalogues are based on the same cataloging rules from Eva Verona's Pravilnik i priručnik za izradbu abecednih kataloga. This thesis will examine the use of uniform title as a medium of gathering for anonymous and authored works.
