Abstract
The concept of autobiography dates back to the 18th century, whereas it enters the center of attention of literary studies in the middle of the 19th century, thus constituting its own continuity in Croatian literature. Because of its broad features and its use of various literary forms, autobiography is considered to be a peripheral genre. This paper initially presents the theoretical background of the development of autobiography as a literary genre, focusing largely on the various difficulties it faced on the road to affirmation. The outline of the paper is based on a reading of the autobiographical text Što je moja krivnja? [What Is My Fault?] by Marija Jurić Zagorka. The text was written as a reaction to the social isolation Zagorka felt in the aftermath of World War 2, the intention being to defend her own authorial and public position. Furthermore, this paper examines the nature of such autobiographical writing that is structured around dialog. This autobiographical text is then taken up further in order to examine the formation of Zagorka’s identity under the structural principle of a hypothetical courtroom defense testimony. In this sense, the construction of Zagorka’s own defense is tantamount to a defense on the level of discourse, placing her autobiography within the domain of highly fictionalized narratives, thus showing the practice of autobiography to be all the more complex.
