Abstract

The advancements in information technologies have changed the way we approach learning and teaching. Information technologies provide support to all participants in academic education. Learning management systems that enable student and professors to communicate, evaluate knowledge and access study materials have been developed alongside information technologies. The new developments require the academic libraries to keep up and provide access to digital information and sources. Academic libraries can make use of learning management systems to accomplish their task of providing support to the educational process. Libraries can use learning management systems to communicate with students; to provide access to library catalogues, data bases and repositories; to create a digital repository of course materials that can be accessed through the learning management system; and to offer their users information literacy courses and instructions on how to search and use data bases. This paper aims to: - determine and define the role of the academic library and the academic librarian, - define and explain the terms digital library, distance learning, learning management systems and information literacy, and assess their relevance within the contemporary higher education system, - demonstrate the options of integrating academic libraries and learning management systems - examine and analyze the integration of academic libraries in Croatia with learning management systems and the role the libraries play in facilitating their operation and content creation, - analyze the obstacles that prevent academic libraries from having a more significant impact on the operation of learning management systems and content creation.
