Abstract
For a large number of people, everyday use of social networks has opened a new “stage” of self-presentation and identity creation. This paper aims to prove whether there is a connection between social capital and some for ms of self-presentation (expression of identity) on social networks. For the purposes of the research, six instruments were created in order to measure social capital, elements of self - presentation and socio-demographic characteristics of the respondents. The survey was conducted via online survey on a sample of 301 respondents. Some interesting and valuable results have been found that support the basic hypothesis of the paper, more precisely the connection between social capital and online identity. Respondents who like social networks because more people can notice them have higher social capital than those who claim that it does not apply to them. Furthermore, respondents who use their own image as a profile picture , who have completed the textual section of the online profile and who share information about their religious beliefs and political orientation, have higher social capital than other. Finally, the results show that respondents who share locations of famous sites they have visited, who point out brands and products they like, and who publish online books that they have read , have greater social capital than those who don’t do such practices.
