Abstract

The biggest difficulty that sociologists, explorers and theoreticians who study the prison environment encounter is finding a way how to untangle the complex relationship network found within the prison population. There has been only a handful of researches conducted that took the segment into consideration and did so using ethnographic(ethnic) methods or by conducting interviews. Those researches intended to connect the work done by state institutions that are entrusted with the management of the prison system, personal experiences as well as the structural conditions of prison life. Even though we are witnesses of improvements within the Croatian prison system we are still lacking substantial research studies (those which surpass the statistical analysis of the police, state attorney’s office and the judiciary) for which we would need more social engagement as well as more research studies for the system can only progress if all actors come into play. It is paramount to engage prison personnel and convicts who may provide answers first hand trough their own experiences, because without their contribution there can not be a real change in the prison system. This thesis aims to give an insight into the experiences young convicts had while they were serving their sentence and to open a discussion based on the acquired data as well as clarify topics we should focus on having in mind the goal of improving the prison system in Croatia. The research comprises half structured interviews that was used with various interlocutors that all have a common ground of having experienced the life within the prison system.
