Abstract
In order for formal learning to take place (which is mostly performed in educational institutions) and to maintain teaching successful, there has to be someone who will perform it. That person is a teacher who has necessary competences for the implementation of education and upbringing of students. When speaking about learning, people mostly think of formal learning which is institutionalized and intentional. With time, other shapes of learning such as non-formal and informal were recognized. After that, e-learning, which can be successful even though there is no teacher present, appeared. The teacher can appear in videos, but the student chooses when she/he will watch them. Massive open online courses (MOOCs) have developed from e-learning and in this paper the focus is on them. When they appeared, a new dimension was added to learning. MOOCs enable everyone to learn about everything. Additionally, terms like upbringing, education, tuition and others which are related to the subject are described in this paper. The aim of the paper is to present MOOCs, explain how they have developed and compare the current situation in the USA and the Republic of Croatia.
