Abstract

The purpose of this study is to discover and compare different attitudes towards the most important headteacher's competences needed for successfull elementary school leaders. Research is based on the one conducted by Stjepan Stančić published in 2001. This qualitative research was conducted on a sample of 53 examinees devided in four groups: headteacher, pedagogue, first level elementary school teashers and second level elementary school teachers. All of the examinees, at the time of research conducting, were working in the same elementary school. Data were collected in two ways. Both groups of teachers had to fill questionnaire, and data form headteacher and pedagogue was collected using semi-structured interviews Results showed that all examinees see the personal competence as the most impostrant one. This competence is deffined by leader's experiences and responces. Data showed that the next competence is action competence, in other words, practical leader's performance. In the middle there are developing competence and interpersonal competence. At the end, there is professional competence due to oppinion that the knowledge of educational process must be encquired by all professionals engaged in elementary school education.
