Abstract

This thesis deals with the Declaration on the Name and Status of the Croatian Literary Language (1967) within the context of cultural, political and linguistic problematics. The Declaration was created in Matrix Croatica and accepted in 17 other cultural and scientific institutions while the atmosphere in Yugoslavia in the late 1960s was heating up because of many reforms and debates/discussions on national relations. Despite the efforts of unitary language policy based on Novi Sad Agreement (1954), which was advocating for unified Serbo-Croatian language, the practice of imposing Serbian as a state language led to Declaration's demands addresing the status of the Croatian language. The most important demand is that the Croatian language should bear its own name and should hold the equal position to other languages spoken in Yugoslavia. Since League of Communists had not recognised the Serbian and Croatian as separate standard variants at the time, Declaration's demands were considered controversial, they provoked condemnation of the public and the document itself was called a nationalist document that breaks the concept of interethnic equality. Apart from political consequences that arose from the events related to Declaration, it had left an indelible mark on the later language questions, as well as on cultural issues during Croatian Spring and the 1970s.
