Abstract
National identity and nationalism are endless issues of social sciences and humanities. It became more relevant after the fall of communism in Europe in the late 1980s. New nations – states tried to promote themselves on the world scene and the best way to do it was through sports and big sports manifestations. The goal of this masters is to analise the role of sports in building national identity and unity in the Republic of Croatia during the 1990s. During that decade, Croatian sport teams have made great achievement in the Olympics Games and world competitions. The ethical definition of a nation has emerged due to social processes which were the result of state creation, war happening and strengthening of national identity. High performance sport had a significant and representing role in the process of forming and unifying the national identity of Croatian society. In order to collect data to accomplis the goals fo the masters a quality case study was implemented. Five most significant sport cases from the first decade were analyzed by going through studies from various authors form different parts of the science community. Likewise, media analysis of the events were used in my study. The analization confirmed that the sport achievements had a positive effect on the state of the croatian nation and had a big role on the creation of national unity.The analysis of the sport events confirmed that the media, political elite and the sportsmen had a similar viewing of the events and they recognized the events as an important factor in the afirmation of the new Republic of Croatia. Some events were considered more important than other but nevertheless all of them had great impact on the creation of the modern state and national identity.
