Abstract
The Village Institutes were an educational institutions opened in Turkey between 1940
and 1950. Their aim was to bring the peasants in the regime and to teach them modern
agricultural techniques. Given that 80 % of the population lived in villages and only 14 % was
literate, it can be understood why the education of the peasants and the development of
agriculture was seen as one of the urgent needs at the time. The Village institutes also had a
great role in Turkish literature. Thanks to them matured a new generation of writers who later
became leaders of rural literature and village novel in Turkish literature.
