Abstract
In the time of modern media and fast-paced technology advancements, every day we are being surrounded by numerous kinds of information. It often happens that we do not know how to manage or use them, whether they are credible and necessary or unnecessary. Given that even the adults have hard time managing large amounts of information, it can be expected that children find it even more difficult. One of the main reasons of this situation is childrens' insufficient information literacy.
Therefore, the aim of this thesis was to investigate the information seeking behavior and habits of Zagreb elementary school pupils. Additionally, tasks and engagement of the school and school library in the training of pupils’ critical thinking and in the raising of active users of information were examined. A research methodology of written data collection was used, and the survey was conducted among 352 pupils in the third, fifth and eighth grade.
The results showed an inadequate level of information literacy as well as the need for additional education which will give pupils the skills to find, evaluate and use different sources of knowledge. It is also necessary to promote the library as an institution that can offer more services beyond the ones pupils currently use.
