Abstract
This paper analyzes power mechanisms in works of Marin Držić. Sifting through
dramatic opus, poems and non-fiction documents was achieved using the work’s author’s own
analyses and conclusions, as well as scholarly literature. Reading methodology closely
followed new historicism's approach to text; it’s focus is set on context epistemology. In order
to better determine the relationship between power, rule and authority in Marin Držić’s works,
besides politicality of theater and theatricality of politics, relations between society and class
were also touched upon, as well as relations between economics, money and gender issues.
Without Marin Držić’s political letters, new historical approach would equally well legitimize
the reading of Dubrovnik author’s opus. Besides Planeta Držić monography by Slobodan
Prosperov Novak and Works by Marin Držić prepared by Frano Čale, modern literature was
also consulted, primarily anthologies containing a few scientific meetings held in 2008 during
500th anniversary of Držić’s birth.
