Abstract

The primary focus of this thesis is set on the discipline of contemporary religious history, as a subdiscipline of history. The main objectives are: a) To identify the interpretative paradigms represented in the discourse about religion and the modes of interpretation of religion in contemporary historiography; b) To establish a metatheorical view and critical analysis of fundamental epistemological settings, theoretical principles and methodological procedures, i.e. the research potential of critical currents within the umbrella term of postmodernism, feminism and the concept of secularisation in contemporary religious history. Bearing in mind the complexity of the interrelationship of religion and history within contemporary historiography, it is necessary to establish analytical and interpretative frameworks: a) comparative (modern postmodernist and feminist approaches), and b) transdisciplinary (concepts and paradigms of related socio-humanistic sciences). The aim of the paper is to present critically the most interesting interpretative paradigms of the academic study of religion in modern and contemporary age.
