Abstract
The purpose of this study was to investigate various teaching strategies that novice teachers of
English as a foreign language implement in order to cope with anxiety and stress experienced
in the classroom setting. Furthermore, this study also examined what strategies the novice
teachers perceived to be more effective, as well as their reasoning for implementing certain
strategies. To collect the necessary data, a list of stressors which were proven to have the
greatest effect on classroom management was extracted from a study by Pavićević (2013),
and a 9-question form was developed. The questionnaire was administered to 49 novice
teachers of English as a foreign language. The results of the research point to communication
and improvisation as most commonly implemented strategies and suggest that more
experienced teachers implement these strategies more easily.
