Abstract
The main focus of this thesis is the strategic construal of English particle verb (PV) constructions with down as the particle. More specifically, we were interested in the strategies Croatian students used to analyse PVs with down. Since the students analysed the PVs through two modes of expression – textual and pictorial, we wished to investigate the strategies they used in their written answers and drawings. Furthermore, we focused on finding out whether their analysis of PVs with down would differ in the two modes. Lastly, the study aimed to explore the possible relationship between the textual and pictorial representations that the participants produced. The results showed that textual answers of PVs with down were generally topological and compositional, while pictorial answers were primarily visual paraphrases. Consequently, it was concluded that the participants did not use the same strategies in constructing meaning textually and pictorially. Lastly, the analysis of the relationship between textual and pictorial representations showed that the pictorial and textual representations were usually created in relation to one another and the relationship was most often that of relay.
