Abstract
The present thesis deals with the functions of pictorial illustrations found in EFL textbooks used in Croatian high schools. The first part of the thesis provides us with the theoretical background on mental imagery and memory theories connected with visual imagery. In addition, it presents Levin’s framework for illustration functions and the use of pictorial illustrations in language learning. The second part of the thesis pays special attention to the textbook analysis whose aim was to examine the role of illustrations in textbooks. In addition, the analysis also focused on the frequency with which they occur in textbooks used in Croatian context.
