Abstract
This study examines the reasons why successful language learners, who are currently language students, have continued with learning some languages, while at the same time they have given up on learning some other languages. The aim of the study was to examine the relative weight of some of the factors attributing to success or failure in the process of language learning. The first part of the study gives a historical overview of the theory on motivation and explains they key terminology. It continues with the report on the most relevant research on motivation, both in the world and in Croatia. Then the pilot survey is described as well as the actual research carried out on the 53 participants, all of them being language students at the Faculty of Philosophy and Social Sciences in Zagreb. The data analysis was carried out in the SPSS program. The obtained results indicate that the parental support contributes to the language learning and that inadequate materials, uninspiring classes, incomprehensible explanations, anxiety and bad class atmosphere are the biggest problem for the successful language learners in Croatia.
