Abstract
This paper deals with the problems of preservation of technical heritage in Croatia. Its aim is to draw attention to this non-conventional heritage, to get to know its history and objects more closely. The first part of the paper discusses the development of technology and reasons behind humankind use of it. Followed by a brief overview of the discipline of industrial archaeology within which today we preserve the technical heritage and its concepts. The second part of the paper describes a brief history of industrial development in Croatia, focusing on the two largest industrial centres, Rijeka-where industry first developed, and Zagreb, which affirmed itself as the main industrial centre. Croatian scientists and inventors are also mentioned, to indicate that Croatia has a wealth of intangible technical heritage. The final part of the thesis was done in cooperation with the Restoration and Conservation Workshop of the Technical Museum as well as with the Industrial Archaeology Craft whose examples demonstrate how to preserve objects that make up technical heritage in Croatia. One of the aims of this thesis is to display various examples of the items we keep as well as those not protected, in order to understand what makes this legacy truly diverse.
The importance of protection of immovable industrial heritage has been recognized in this area, although it has not had highlighted success at protecting, restoring and revitalizing the monuments. The profession writes about it and points to the problems where they exist. There is not enough research about movable industrial heritage in Croatia, which makes it difficult further the research of this legacy. The main problem in Croatia, among other issues, is a low level of awareness for the culture. Overall, this paper seeks to provide a general overview of the technical heritage to facilitate the recognition and awareness of this diverse heritage.
